March is filled with some fun and interesting holidays! Have some fun!
Wednesday, March 14th is National Pi Day. Pi is the Greek letter (). It is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. I like to celebrate this day just to show my children that math is fun! 🙂 Here’s a site that explains what Pi is. TeachPi has some fun activities to celebrate this interesting math-related day! One of my favorite ways to celebrate Pi day is to serve a pizza pie.
Saturday, March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day. I typically serve Corned Beef & Cabbage, Irish Soda Bread, and Colcannon. DLTK has a bunch of crafts to make. The History Channel has some history lessons about the holiday.
Sunday, March 18th is Johnny Appleseed Day. We have Johnny Appleseed to thank for many of the apple trees in the US Northeast. For a brief history and lots of information related to John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, visit Apple Appetite. Of course, you’ll want to enjoy an apple pie in your celebration!
Tuesday, March 20th is the First Day of Spring. Much of the US is usually thrilled with this day! It means the end of the cold and snow of winter and brings the beauty of spring flowers and lush green grass. Apples For The Teacher has many craft ideas to usher in the new season. Lighter foods are usually part of the spring season.
Sunday, March 25th is International Waffle Day (and also the first time in 1882 in NYC that pancakes were made!). This day most definitely calls for Buttermilk Waffles! This link has probably more than you ever wanted to know about waffles and waffle makers.
Saturday, March 31st was when the first map of the United States was published. And here is a free printable map of the US. Animated Atlas is an engaging site that shows the history of the US. This site has a ton of map history! Become a geography whiz with this game, or this game, or even this game.
