Now that we have an actual office in our home, I am finally ready to set up a guest bedroom. being limited on funds I decided to build my own guest bed.
You might be thinking, that sounds a bit crazy but I love a challenge. I decided that I would just keep it simple. I am building a platform bed frame for a full size mattress.
Things I considered before I started:
- How high did I want the frame?
- Would I be using box springs on the frame?
- Did I want the frame to be seen?
What I used:
1 box of 2-inch nails
5 wood studs 2 by 4 by 97
22 wood slats
What I did:
Cut three of the wood studs to 70 inches
Then cut two wood studs to 50 inches
Once I got the wood home, I laid my box frame on the floor.
Do not forget the center support beam.
Place two anchor nails into each corner joint and also into the center support beam.
I laid the slats on the frame alternating them before nailing them to the frame.
Make sure that the slats are not hanging over the outside of the frame before nailing them down.
For each slat, use one nail for the outside board and one for the center support beam.
We used slats we had from a previous bed. If you are purchasing wood to make the slats just purchase them cut to the length of the bed and use three nails two for the outer beams and one for the center support beam.
Once ever thing is nailed together take a moment to admire your handy work.
Place your mattress or on top of your frame. Your new bed is ready to be used.
This can be used to make any size bed. Buy the wood four inches smaller than the size mattress you will be using.
Excluding the mattress, this frame cost less than $60 to make a full size bed. You do not need box spring to have a comfortable bed.
The slats work out to be 11 the full length of the bed, a slat width apart, or 22 if they are cut in half alternating. You can use any type of 1 by 2 inch boards for the slats and they cost between one and two dollars depending on what you choose.
Considering we like our beds to be low to the floor, I used 4-inch boards. If you want your frame higher, you can adjust your measurement accordingly or just add feet to your four corners.
With the extra wood, we applied the same process and made a bed for our dog Silver.
Give it a try and do let me know how you do!
