The first day of school is always filled with excitement and anticipation. New school supplies, new books, new learning adventures are all on tap.
First day back to school traditions are a great way to ease the transition into a routine. Celebrating the first day adds some fun to the day!
First Day Back to School Traditions:
1. One of our favorite first-day traditions is to have a big plate of cookies to share at the end of the day. This goes back to my childhood. My Mom always had a treat waiting for us when we got home from school. Chocolate chip cookies were the usual choice. Mom made everything from scratch, and I do as much as possible. But, life sometimes calls for simplicity and ease.
By stocking up on frozen cookie dough, you can have a plate of hot, freshly baked cookies in no time! Did you know that you can bake these cookies from frozen? Yes! Just pull them out, put them on a pan, place that pan in a pre-heated oven, and bake! {and you can help your school by saving those Box Tops for Education labels! See the end of this post for more information!}
2. Another fun first-day tradition is to go out to eat. We’ve done this in years past. Since we homeschool, when I had all four children in school, it was nice to not have to think about making supper on that first day. Plus, we rarely go out to eat as a family, so it was a special event.
3. How about a fun breakfast to start the day together? Maybe make pancakes in the shape of the number grade your children are beginning? You could design the pancakes by putting the batter in a squeeze bottle and free-handing the number onto the griddle.
4. First day of school interview page. I wish that I had thought of this 19 years ago when we first began our homeschooling journey. How fun it would be to look back over those pages!
5. Back to school photos. Now, this one I’ve done. It is indeed so fun to see my children grow from year to year!
What first day back to school traditions do you have? I’d love to add to this list! Share away!

How fun! We don’t really have anything super special, but I’m beginning to think we need to. I keep seeing so many fun ideas! The kids all make a poster with their grade and age and decorate it so we can take pictures. That’s about it! Maybe I’ll make some cookies 🙂
