If you’ve spent any time around this site, you know that food and entertaining are two of my favorite things. One thing that I used to really love was to craft. Somewhere along the past few years, I’ve left the crafting part of me behind. With my new office and planner room, I’m finding that crafting bug is coming back.
For your next game day party, rather than just offering your guests a Coca-Cola®, how about creating a soda bar? Your guests can mix and match flavorings and add-ins to create their own unique drink.
To make a soda bar, you’ll need:
Fruits- lemons, limes, cherries
Decorated mason jars (super easy!)
Turn those mason jars into footballs and referees quite simply with colored electrical tape. Electrical tape works especially well to decorate because it’s easily applied and removed. If the tape isn’t exactly where you intended it to be placed, you can pull it up and re-stick it where you desire.
To make the football jars, wrap the jar with brown electrical tape. Cut the white tape into thinner strips to add the “laces” to the football jar.
To make the referee jars, alternately line the jar with vertical strips of white and black electrical tape. Use a razor to trim the tape at the neck of the jar for a finished look.
On party day, set up the soda bar. I like to add some height to the table with sturdy boxes covered with fabric. Add all of the flavored syrups, mix-ins, and toppings. Fill a cup with colorful straws.
Another fun addition to this soda bar is vanilla ice cream. Who doesn’t love a Coca-Cola Float?! Make it super simple by scooping the ice cream into mason jars, screw on a plastic lid, and freeze ahead of party time. To add these to your soda bar, place the ice cream jars in a bowl of ice. (Here, I added a second platter of ice beneath the bowl to ensure the ice cream wouldn’t melt too quickly.)
Taco Dip is my go-to party food. It’s quick to assemble ahead of time. On party day, place it into a cool oven, turn the temperature to 350*, and let it bake for 15 minutes or until heated through & cheese is melted. Serve with RITZ Crackers, TRISCUIT, or Wheat Thins (or a combo of all three!) and you have a simple yet filling dish. I added extra chopped onions and sweet peppers to half of this Taco Dip since some of our guests are not big fans of either.
To stock up for this game day party, we headed to Kroger. What fun my Mom and I had wandering the many aisles of Kroger while she and Dad were here visiting us. We used to do all of our grocery shopping together, so it was such a treat to shop here and chat. Bright, wide aisles made our shopping time a joy!
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1-2 cups refried beans
- 2 cups salsa
- 1 block cream cheese, at room temperature
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 cup shredded Mexican Cheddar cheese blend
- Spray a 9X12 glass pan with non-stick spray.
- Brown the ground beef. Once cooked, add ½ cup salsa, stir to combine.
- In a bowl, combine the cream cheese and sour cream.
- To assemble taco dip, begin by spreading the taco meat over the bottom of the glass dish.
- Add the cream cheese/sour cream mixture. This works best by dropping by spoonfuls over the ground beef, then spread carefully.
- Add the refried beans.
- Top with a thick layer of shredded cheese.
- Bake at 350* for 15 minutes and serve with crackers.
- Or wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to bake. Be sure to place glass pan into a cold oven, then turn the oven to 350*F and cook 15 minutes or so or until heated through and cheese is melted.
